The University has preserved throughout the centuries a long tradition of high quality teaching and research, being one of the most ancient academic institutions in the world. In fact, its foundation goes back to 1224, when Frederick II Hohenstaufen, King of Sicily and Head of the Roman Empire, decided to create a state university subtracting the education of the administrative personnel of his own state to the monopoly of the northern universities.

Since its creation the University has been growing steadily, becoming a landmark in the cultural and social context of the south of Italy. Nowadays the figures of enrolled students, teaching staff and research departments make Universita' di Napoli Federico II one of the largest Italian universities.
